Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform original and independent research on large scale reservoir simulation of multiple interacting subsurface storage sites. You will develop methods to model compositional multiphase flow on high-performance computing platforms for geologic carbon storage and underground hydrogen storage applications. This position is in the Porous Media Group in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division.

In this role you will

  • Conduct original and independent research on compositional multiphase flow in porous and faulted media, with a focus on interaction of reservoir-scale processes.
  • Develop numerical algorithms and discretization schemes to efficiently model these large-scale processes on high-performance computing platforms using hybrid CPU/GPU architectures.
  • Develop methods to quantify uncertainty in model predictions based on variability in reservoir properties.
  • Publish reports and peer-review publications summarizing research findings.
  • Present results at program meetings and scientific conferences.
  • Work in a diverse, multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Energy Resources Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil and/or Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with reservoir simulations and compositional multiphase flow.
  • Knowledge of numerical methods, including discretization schemes and linear/nonlinear solution techniques.
  • Knowledge of uncertainty quantification.
  • Experience with software development, including parallel computing paradigms.
  • Experience producing reports, publications, and proposals.
  • Research creativity, with outstanding ability and knowledge in the applicant’s area of specialization.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a diverse, multidisciplinary team environment and present technical information.

Qualifications we desire

  • Exposure to programming in C++, GPU computing, including relevant programming languages.
  • Experience with modern software development environments, including version control and testing frameworks.
