Pay Range

$39.98 - $49.65 Hourly for the 531.2 level
$47.93 - $59.49 Hourly for the 531.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for Electronic Technologist / Senior Electronics Technologist supporting the Global Security (GS) Directorate. In this position you will have the opportunity to provide electronic design and fabrication support for LLNL’s world recognized Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST), Render Safe Operations (RSO) in their unique training aid, preparedness, and response activities. In this role, you will build electrical and electronic assemblies, integrate, and install complex electronic components as well as provide support for the customized training aids, and other prototype equipment associated with these training aids. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate. This position will include the opportunity for overtime to meet a fast-paced customer delivery requirement.  There are opportunities to travel and field custom training aids in offsite locations.

The position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide general electronic technical support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff to plan and conduct experiments at LLNL and other off-site locations and ensure operational readiness.
  • Design maintain, assemble, and disassemble complex electrical components and systems, using established work control processes as well as author updates to procedures and requirements.
  • Operate equipment set up and conduct detailed troubleshooting on field support equipment with sponsors.
  • Identify and communication discrepancies; recommend and purchase parts and assemblies while adhering to security policies.
  • Conduct on-site and off-site routine safety and security inspections while maintaining a high level of technical support.
  • Performs under general supervision, makes routine commitments as authorized by immediate supervisor and regularly reports to supervisor.
  • Limited contact outside of work unit including upper management, off-site facilities, and Sponsors of Training Aids.
  • Assigned with moderately complex technical tasks such as schematic drawings, parts lists, assembly drawings, and verbal requirements into specific hardware deliverables.
  • Perm other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 531.3 level

  • Recommend modifications of electronic circuits and system designs; provide electronic designs and schematics; and understand comprehensive troubleshooting on HV circuits.
  • Provide advanced technical support demonstrating complex understanding of electronics and/or electro-optic theory and application while employing sophisticated test equipment and troubleshooting methods.
  • Use advanced methods of data collection to identify problems and recommend solutions.
  • Perform under minimal supervision and limited administrative authority in production and fabrication of electronic assemblies and devices.  May lead, train or mentor other technicians.
  • Provide general technical support as well as organizational support to engineers and senior level staff in preparation and coordination of Training deployments.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate Degree in electronics, computer science, electro-optics technology or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes electronic training.
  • Intermediate knowledge of electronic sensors and integration into electrical systems.
  • Ability to program microcontrollers and other control boards to manage electrical systems.
  • Intermediate technical skills and knowledge of electronic circuit design; ability to solve  circuitry or system challenges using established guidelines, techniques, formulas, and procedures.
  • Possess effective written, verbal and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively handling multiple assignments concurrently.
  • Ability to travel domestically in support of offsite experimental test campaigns.
  • Ability  to drive a vehicle greater than 10,000lbs GVW.

Qualifications at the 531.3 Level

  • Advanced skills and demonstrated understanding of electronic designs, schematics, modifications to electronic circuits and system designs, and troubleshooting of HV circuits.
  • Experience in electronics and/or electro-optic theory, employing sophisticated test equipment and troubleshooting methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision in the production and fabrication of electronic assemblies and devices; experience in leading, training or mentoring other technicians.  

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ability to maintain documentation relating to experimental assemblies.
  • Experience with utilizing, generating, and communicating 3D models and generating 2D detailed drawings for fabrication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others and multi-task assignments.
