Pay Range

$159,330 - $245,544

$159,330 - $204,636 Annually for the SES.3 level

$191,220 - $245,544 Annually for the SES.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Lead Analyst to support Flight Test Group. The Flight Test Group is a fast-paced, cross-disciplinary team. Team members are expected to be adaptable and to develop skills in areas outside of their core competencies; you will be well-rounded and possess a desire to expand your skillset.  Your primary role will be leading a small team of analysts to deliver mission scoring results and assist mission planning activities supporting the entire team and our external program sponsors. Your programmatic work will involve the consideration of camera optics, autonomous vehicles, deployment logistics, and scoring and uncertainty analysis. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED). DTED provides support to Strategic Deterrence (SD) Programs.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will 

  • Maintain and support a wide range of codes used by the flight test group, including:
    • An in-house scoring code to generate impact location, miss distance, height of burst, velocity, dive angle, and trajectory, etc.
    • Spatial rendering software for optimization of autonomous vehicles (rafts & drones)
    • Control software for autonomous vehicles
    • Uncertainty analysis quantification (sampling, sensitivities, reliability, Bayesian calibration)
    • Post-mission image analysis, including calculation of variables of interest on flight vehicles and burst characteristics
  • Innovate new methodologies for data processing, explore use of new algorithms, and collaborate with team members to identify and proactively adapt to future program needs for data interpretation.
  • Act as a code user to support mission preparedness, execution, and analysis. Author, prepare, and/or contribute to technical presentations to sponsors on analysis results.
  • Support flight tests in foreign locations with deployments of up to 2 weeks, a couple of times per year.
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks as appropriate to meet programmatic deliverables, while overseeing the work of junior analysts; Lead the weekly analyst team meetings.
  • Evaluate and adapt software development and quality assurance practices, contributing to their continuous improvement.
  • Assist in identifying, interviewing, and hiring additional analysts to join the team.
  • Collaborate in the analysis, development, and utilization of a variety of established or creative approaches, methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to provide solutions to complex problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

  • Interface with program sponsors to articulate scoring results, software capabilities, and future enhancement opportunities to grow the LIDSS analytic capabilities.
  • Serve as the LIDSS subject matter expert (SME) and software quality assurance point of contact for the entire LIDSS software suite.
  • Help drive experiments that help validate modeling efforts and/or uncertainties in the code and provide briefings to sponsors on ramifications of these uncertainties; actively participate as a core member of the experimentalist team.
  • Lead, guide, and mentor other analysts, and train newly hired staff and junior members.  Meet to discuss career development and assist with setting attainable goals.
  • Perform and/or lead the analysis, development, modification, and utilization of a variety of innovative and diverse approaches, methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to provide solutions to highly complex problems.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and previous related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of scientific computing/numerical analysis.
  • Significant experience with modeling and analysis of physical systems.
  • Sufficient capability to code bases in Java, MATLAB, Python, and C/C++.
  • Experience working with field data and interpreting results.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Adaptable, highly detail oriented, and comfortable working on a cross-disciplinary team; willingness to learn and perform new duties in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Experience in developing new codes and vetting those codes against test data.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience having led small teams of individuals to solve highly complex problems using a variety of software and/or codes.
  • Experience managing budgeting constraints on staffing and deliverables.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Fundamental understanding of optics principles.
  • Familiarity with image analysis and extracting engineering parameters from optical images.
  • Experience with development of software GUI’s for use in developing easy to use tools to aid analysis.
