Pay Range

$110,700 - $170,556

$110,700 - $142,128 Annually for the SES.1 level

$132,810 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Power Grid Engineers to conduct research in the topics of power system modeling and simulation, analysis, planning, operation, resilience, lab testing of devices and integrated systems, and field pilots. You will support LLNL’s Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program’s growing research portfolio in electric grid infrastructure. You will participate in collaborative research projects funded by the Department of Energy and similar, the State of California, and private sectors. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Conduct research in the topics of power system modeling and simulation, analysis, planning, operation, resilience, microgrids, lab testing of devices and integrated systems, and field pilots using standard technical principles, concepts, and techniques.
  • Present formal and informal overviews of research progress at group meetings.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  • Support complex research projects that require the creative use of established or innovative methods, working with competing priorities, and implementing advanced research concepts in a multidisciplinary team environment where dedication and deadlines are important to project success.
  • Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in conferences and workshops.
  • Engage directly with sponsors and partners and participate in development of new program business.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Knowledge of at least one power grid simulation software, such as GridLab-D, CYMDIST, OpenDSS, PowerWorld, PSLF, PSS/E.
  • Knowledge or experience developing software in languages such as Python, C++, Matlab/Simulink for prototyping power grid algorithms and visualization.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to independently craft solutions to problems using fundamental knowledge and adhering to defined practices and procedures.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and document work.
  • Ability to travel off-site for conference presentations, and sponsor and customer interaction.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience in the application and development in the topics of power system modeling and simulation, analysis, planning, operation, resilience, lab testing of devices and integrated systems, and field pilots.
  • Problem-solving skills that involve creative solutions and innovative methods.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Power grid industry experience in practical power grid infrastructure resilience applications, with Department of Energy (DOE), and other relevant state government agencies.
