Pay Range

$107,820 - $121,680 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Arms Control Verification and Monitoring R&D - Postdoctoral Researchers to engage in cutting edge research, design, and testing of verification & monitoring methods.  We invite PhD graduates from various disciplines, including physics, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, and material science to apply for one of our Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in support of innovative and advanced capabilities for future arms control treaty verification agreements.  We will work with successful candidates to tailor a postdoctoral project and select a mentor to support each individual’s development. This opportunity is intended for individuals who have finished their PhD and wish to further develop their skills, knowledge, and/or abilities to better position themselves for a future staff position in support of Nonproliferation R&D and Arms Control Programs, or elsewhere in LLNL.

We will select highly qualified candidates based on demonstrated research aptitude and then customize the project assignment to fit their abilities and interests as well as our needs within the new multi-lab, multi-disciplinary effort for Priority Research Objectives for Arms Control Technology Innovation, Verification and Evaluation (PROACTIVE). Research within this effort will span a wide variety of topics including, development and testing of verification & surveillance detection technologies; algorithms and machine learning techniques relevant to protection of sensitive information, template matching and uncertainty quantification; methods for automated monitoring and data analysis, persistent monitoring methods for item tracking; new chain-of-custody and monitoring technologies for accountable items and verification equipment, advanced methods for data authentication, transmission and protection; and integrated system design and analysis for information and equipment protection; These positions will be within the Global Security,  Physical & Life Sciences, or Engineering Directorates at LLNL.

In this role you will

  • Contribute to development and testing of new & innovative tools for warhead verification & monitoring.
  • Function as an independent researcher with a high-level of attention to detail.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team, including industrial and academic partners, to accomplish research goals.
  • Publish papers in peer-reviewed technical journals, and present results at working group meetings, within the DOE community, and at conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Recent PhD in physical science, engineering, computer science, material science, applied mathematics or a related field.
  • Experience conducting high-quality research in a relevant field, demonstrating both detailed understanding and a broad perspective.
  • Demonstrated significant accomplishments in one or more of the relevant topical research areas of PROACTIVE.
  • Experience in developing innovative solutions to scientific and technical problems.
  • Proficient written, verbal, and organizational skills necessary to effectively collaborate within small and large work groups.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.

Qualifications We Desire

 

  • Experience developing and applying machine learning methods for problems in physics, applied math, or materials science.
  • Experience with developing and testing novel radiation detection systems.
  • Experience with developing methods of automation, encryption, secure data authentication, storage, and transmission.
  • Experience with developing chain of custody technologies.
  • Experience with Monte Carlo modeling physics codes, such as, MCNP or Geant4.
  • Experience with systems/pathway analysis of complex system or optimization problems (e.g., game theory), and integrated system design.
  • Experience or familiarity with principles of nuclear arms control policy and/or technical verification.
  • Experience or familiarity with nuclear weapons enterprise operations.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
