Pay Range

$191,220 - $245,544 Annually for the SES.4 Level 

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Nevada Capability Implementation Engineers to support implementation of novel capabilities for future nuclear material and sub-critical experimental efforts at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). You will work with the design engineering and operational teams across multiple organizations in Nevada to be responsible for the implementation and commissioning of next generation capabilities. This role requires a strong partnership with other National Laboratories and the NNSS Management and Operations (M&O) organization. You will also interface with the Nevada Field Office (NFO) and be expected to represent LLNL programmatic interests at NNSS. Programmatically, you will report to the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Nuclear Materials Associate Program Director (APD)  however, the work activities assigned will support both the WTE program and the Weapon Physics Division (WPD) program elements within the Strategic Deterrence Principal Directorate. Administratively this position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate. This position is based in Nevada.

You will 

  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to a large team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to ensure efficient implementation and activation of programmatic capabilities in support of future experiments.
  • Use in-depth analysis, and independent judgement and latitude to develop and execute integrated implementation plans for new capabilities, detailing work scope, defining schedule, and negotiating shared resources across numerous organizations, including piloting change, developing new ideas and innovative methods, and modifying various approaches.
  • Participate in design and operations reviews to inform capability equipment design, configurations, provide input on facility and programmatic interfaces, and ensure the implementation and construction teams are ready and authorized to conduct work safely.
  • Facilitate planning efforts with WTE/WPD teams and verify capability requirements and engineering specifications are met in support of programmatic objectives.
  • Monitor defined schedules by tracking project progress and providing regular updates to programmatic leadership regarding milestones, plans, and complex to highly complex resourcing/technical problems that could significantly affect costs or schedules.
  • Interface regularly with the NFO and NNSS M&O to prioritize, coordinate and authorize work activities across multiple laboratory agencies, functional work groups and facility teams, while ensuring rigorous coordination and synchronization across organizations.
  • Interface with NNSS operations and facility management to ensure compliance with safety and security programs and procedures.
  • Ensure successful implementation of requirements for Conduct of Operations, Engineering Design Safety Standards, Work Control, Training and Qualification, Issues Management, Readiness, and all applicable laboratory Safety Management Programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge of highly advanced concepts of nuclear facility operations and safety basis documentation.
  • Significant experience effectively leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Expert level application and development experience utilizing project planning, scheduling, professional service estimates, and adherence to completion dates.
  • Experience working on implementation of National Security projects related to nuclear facilities and flexibility to work in multiple types of safety and safety significant systems.
  • Expert verbal and written communication and facilitation skills to collaborate and lead effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% time between Las Vegas, NV and Livermore, CA, or other DOE complex sites as needed.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree or PhD in engineering or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of operating procedures and facility safety bases at NNSS.
  • Familiarity with high explosive and fissile material hazards.
  • Significant experience with or knowledge of Conduct of Operations, Engineering Design Safety Standards, Work Control Processes at NNSS Nevada, Training and Qualification, Issues Management, Readiness, and Laboratory Safety Management Programs.
