Media advisory: Lawrence Livermore, Livermore school district to host NASA space station downlink
WHO: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District are teaming up to give students the opportunity to talk with astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
WHAT: After submitting an application to NASA's education program, Livermore's Junction Avenue School was selected to host an in-flight education downlink, similar to a video conference, with space station crew members.
Former astronaut Tammy Jernigan, now working at LLNL, will kick off the event in Livermore and serve as the program's emcee.
Students will pose questions and watch from the school's multi-purpose room as crew members answer questions and demonstrate science, technology, engineering and math concepts in ways that are impossible on Earth. The question and answer session also will be conducted in both English and Spanish.
In addition, LLNL will present a "Fun with Science" show with hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations that explain science principles and the states of matter.
