Sick and Vacation Leave Advance

Effective immediately, employees can use the Self-Service module in LAPIS to request a sick or vacation leave advance. As a general reminder, employees should discuss vacation requests with their supervisor prior to submitting it in LAPIS. Sick leave advances may be requested from 8 to 80 hours, while vacation advances can be requested from 8 to 40 hours.

How it works

To request a sick leave advance:

  1. Sign in to LAPIS.
  2. Go to the TIME tile.
  3. Select Sick Leave Advance, located on the left side of your screen.
    1. Enter amount of advance, ranging from 8 to 80 hours.
    2. Check the box agreeing to repayment and submit.

To request a vacation advance:

  1. Sign in to LAPIS.
  2. Go to the TIME tile.
  3. Select Vacation Advance Request, located on the left side of your screen.
    1. Enter amount of advance ranging from 8 to 40 hours.
    2. Check the box agreeing to repayment and submit.

When using sick leave or vacation leave, accrued hours will be used and exhausted prior to use of the advanced leave. Both sick leave and vacation leave advances are effective the Sunday prior to the election date and can be used as early as the week it is requested. Requested hours will be credited into the employee’s accrual balance but will not appear until the following payroll processing.

Repayment of the sick leave advance and vacation advance will be made by future accruals and will begin immediately. After repayment of the initial sick leave advance, a new request may be submitted in TIME. If repayment of the sick leave advance and vacation advance is not met at termination, the employee must agree to repay LLNS the outstanding balance, if any.

Eligibility

Employees eligible to accrue sick leave (excluding indeterminate time and employees in the Scholars Program) may be granted an advance of up to two weeks of sick leave to cover their own illness or to care for an ill family member. A sick leave advance will only be granted to an employee who has less than 80 hours of sick leave accrued at the time of the request.

Employees eligible to accrue vacation leave (excludes those on indeterminate status) may be granted an advance of up to 40 hours of vacation. A vacation leave advance will only be granted to an employee who has less than 40 hours of vacation leave accrued at the time of the request.

Please note

  • Hours requested for sick leave advance must be in whole number increments, and the minimum amount requested must be at least 8 hours and cannot exceed 80 hours.
  • Hours requested for vacation leave advance must be in whole number increments, and the minimum amount requested must be at least 8 hours and cannot exceed 40 hours.
