The 20th Annual San Joaquin Expanding Your Horizons conference, co-sponsored by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, returns Saturday, Oct. 6, to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, beginning at 8:15 a.m.

The popular daylong conference introduces young women in grades 6-12 to a variety of challenging careers that will inspire their interest in mathematics and science. More than 500 participants from Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, Tracy and Ripon are expected to attend, as well as many from Stanislaus County, including Modesto and Ceres.

Since its inception, thousands of young San Joaquin and Stanislaus County women have participated in this annual event. Many past attendees have gone on to exciting careers in math, science and engineering and now return to volunteer their time to help motivate others.

Participants will discover how much fun it can be to work in math, science and engineering while attending three hands-on workshops where new skills will be learned. During the workshops, participants will explore topics such as: "Talking at the Speed of Light"; "Electricity: The Shocking Truth"; and "From Laser Physics to iPhone Engineering."

They also will enjoy a career fair with interesting displays and fascinating demonstrations, as well as meet mentors and other girls who are interested in these areas.

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC, Sandia National Laboratories, and the University of the Pacific School of Engineering co-sponsor the EYH conference.

The conference hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, go to the Website or see the brochure .
