You be the judge

Judges are needed to review students' projects at the 13th Annual Tri-Valley Science and Engineering Fair (TVSEF) sponsored by the Lab and held at the Robert Livermore Community Center, 4444 East Ave., Livermore.

The date of judging is Wednesday, March 25, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

There's still time to volunteer. This is a great opportunity for Lab scientists and engineers, as well as Lab retirees, to serve as role models for budding scientists.  As a judge you will get to know the students, review and rank their projects and promote science careers. Judging is done in teams and is organized by discipline area.

The annual fair is a means to stimulate interest in science and technology among middle and high school students from public, private and parochial schools within Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, San Ramon and Sunol.  If you are interested in being a judge, contact ruvalcabaolson1 [at] llnl.gov (Connie Olson) at (925) 424-4640.

EYH highlights careers in math and science

More than 270 young women in grades 6-9 gathered last Saturday for the annual Tri-Valley "Expanding Your Horizons" in science and math (EYH) conference at the Diablo Valley College, San Ramon Campus.

The goal of the conference, now in its 30th year, is to increase students' interest and foster their awareness of careers in math and science.

Congressman Jerry McNerney spoke briefly during the opening ceremony and recognized the volunteers from LLNL and Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore for their work in coordinating the conference and supporting educational outreach. Judy Walters, president of Diablo Valley College (DVC), also spoke and acknowledged the labs' partnership in hosting the conference at DVC's San Ramon campus.

Keynote speaker Donna Djordjevich, a computer scientist from Sandia who specializes in developing computer games, shared her background and motivation for her chosen career.

Throughout the day, participants attended hands-on workshops and a career fair with representatives from 12 organizations, including the Exploratorium, the Blackhawk Museum and LLNL's National Ignition Facility.
