‘Science on Saturday’ lecture to highlight nuclear fusion

WHO: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) scientists Derek Mariscal and Dave Schlossberg, along with teacher Tom Shefler of Granada High School, will present “Bringing Star Power to Earth: Harnessing Nuclear Fusion,” the third lecture in the 2022 virtual Science on Saturday series that highlights Energy and the Environment.

WHAT: This presentation will provide an overview of the fusion science conducted on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), including experiments, simulations and the application of machine learning to better understand the physics of these highly complex physical phenomena. NIF is the world’s largest and most energetic laser system and was built to create extreme states of matter, like those found in stellar and planetary interiors. At NIF, scientists, engineers and technicians work on the grand challenge of recreating the engines of stars on Earth by harnessing fusion. For more information, click here.

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Science on Saturday is a virtual presentation. Register here.

NOTE: Science on Saturday is sponsored by LLNL's University Relations and Science Education Program. Lectures are free and open to the public and specifically targeted to middle and high school students.
