Lab blood donations earn Presidential award

The Lab received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the Northern California Blood Services Division of the American Red Cross Thursday in recognition of employee commitment to the community through blood donation.

Harry Beardsley, of the American Red Cross Northern California Region, nominated LLNL for the award. "The Lab has donated more than 18,000 units since we began coordinating the blood drives here," Beardsley said, adding that because of the donations, 60,000 lives have been touched.

The Lab has been sponsoring the blood drives for more than 25 years and is the largest corporate sponsor for the American Red Cross Northern California Region. It is the only sponsor west of the Mississippi to hold four-day blood drives, currently holding three four-day drives per year. Lab employees donated more than 700 units (pints) of whole blood in 2008. The Red Cross collected 263 units of whole blood at the Lab’s March 2009 drive.

Several Lab retirees are Red Cross volunteers and have become an integral component of LLESA’s (Livermore Laboratory Employee Services Association) coordination of the Lab blood drives.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States. It recognizes the best in the American spirit, and encourages all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service and civic participation.

The award is given to individuals, families and groups that have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation.
