Lab outlines employee responsibilities for energy conservation

Editor's note: This feature is brought to you by the Laboratory's Archives and Research Center.

As the Laboratory resolves to cut energy by 9 percent, we look back three decades at some guidelines LLNL employees were provided to achieve energy conservation.

This administrative memo dated Sept. 30, 1977, was issued to Lab employees by then-Plant Manager James Olsen. The Policy and Procedure memo outlines employee responsibilities for achieving an improved energy conservation program.

Key suggestions include turning off the lights in work areas if employees are vacating areas for one-half hour or more; operating research equipment using the minimum energy necessary to accomplish the required work, and minimizing the use of either fans or portable heaters.
