| In autumn 2006, the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) presented a strategic roadmap for new research infrastructures of pan-European relevance. Many of the projects identified can, however, be seen as global or as the European components of worldwide networks. Strategic planning exercises play an increasingly important role in the formulation of science policy. They are particularly valuable in determining the implementation of large-scale research infrastructures, allowing projects to be considered in a broader context. In connection with this, an analysis of existing roadmaps and of possible implementation mechanisms of global infrastructures is envisaged by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development Global Science Forum. This symposium addresses issues linked to the global dimension of research infrastructures based on the practical experience of representative examples from the ESFRI Roadmap: Lifewatch, a distributed international infrastructure for biodiversity research; Square Kilometre Array; European Clinical Research Infrastructures Network and biotherapy facilities; SHARE, a data infrastructure on Health, Ageing and Retirement; and the European e-Infrastructure initiative supporting global research communities. The discussants are eminent European and American speakers, and the session is moderated by a scientific journalist. | |
