Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announces change in deputy director position
Laboratory Director George Miller today announced the selection of Tom Gioconda as the Laboratory’s new deputy director. Gioconda currently is in Washington D.C. where he is responsible for Bechtel National's (BNI) business development and operations activities with the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Adminsitration (DOE/NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), and other U.S. government market sectors.
Miller also announced that current Deputy Director Steve Liedle will leave the Laboratory to take a senior position with BNI in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Liedle and Gioconda will transition to their new positions in July.
Gioconda was selected for his wealth of experience and in-depth understanding of the Laboratory and the DOE/NNSA, DoD and Department of Homeland Security missions, strategies and operations, as well as his unique management acumen, according to Miller. "Tom has been an ambassador and longtime friend of the Laboratory in many roles, and he was especially effective in the role of transition manager for the Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) and the Los Alamos National Security, LLC contracts."
A retired Air Force brigadier general, Gioconda currently is a member of the LLNS and Los Alamos National Security Boards of Governors, vice-chair of both the Safeguards and Security and Nuclear Weapons Complex Integration Board of Governor’s Committees, and a former NNSA official. Gioconda holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Montana, a Masters of Education in Education Administration from Seton Hall University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from St. Joseph’s University. He also is a graduate of the Air War College, Air Command and Staff College, and Air Force Squadron Officer School, as well as several missile and space technical programs.
Liedle joined the Laboratory as deputy director in October 2007, when LLNS took over the contract to manage and operate LLNL from the University of California. He has had oversight of the Laboratory’s operations with responsibility to ensure the safe and successful delivery of program commitments. Liedle is a Bechtel principal vice president with more than 27 years of DOE/NNSA experience. The details of his new responsibilities will be the subject of a future Bechtel announcement.
"During his tenure, Steve Liedle has provided steadfast leadership in improving safety, security and environmental management practices across the Laboratory and in successfully implementing cost reduction, work control, and process improvements," Miller said. "Steve has fostered successful relationships at many levels across the Laboratory and with external stakeholders. We wish him well in his new assignment and thank him for his dedication to this Laboratory and for his strong commitment to national security."
