“I think a lot of folks forget that being Jewish isn’t only about Judaism,” Devine said. “We are a biological race of human beings and it’s the culture and strong community I identify most with.”

Lauren Devine is a third-generation American with proud Ashkenazi Jewish roots in Germany and Russia on her mother’s side. Devine prioritizes spending time with her family on the high Jewish holy days but does not necessarily count herself as religious.

“I think a lot of folks forget that being Jewish isn’t only about Judaism,” Devine said. “We are a biological race of human beings and it’s the culture and strong community I identify most with.”

Devine is a user interface and experience designer in the Technical Information Department’s (TID) web team and loves designing websites and applications for groups across the Lab. She spends her spare time continuing her education in web development and programming at Las Positas College and performing in several popular Bay Area-based ‘80s and ‘90s tribute bands throughout California and Nevada.

Devine has a knack for perfection and an eye for detail as an experienced graphic designer of more than 25 years. Having done everything from advertising design to owning and operating a sign shop, Devine’s interest in web design and development grew during her long stint as a freelance designer.

“I realized websites were not going away — even plumbers need websites,” Devine said. “So, I knew this was the direction I needed to go with my design work.”

Since joining the Lab in 2020, Devine has not wasted any time making a name for herself as a member of the TID web team. She loves designing beautiful websites but is just as adamant that the websites be functional and easy to navigate.

“I want to make sure what I design is functionally possible and prudent for our users,” Devine said. “Simply designing ‘pretty’ interfaces isn’t enough. They must work. They must make sense. They must guide the user in reaching their goal when visiting the site.”

Devine is continuing her education with the goal of becoming what she refers to as a “frontend guru.”

“My team and TID leadership are extremely supportive of my education goals,” she said. “It’s great to work at the Lab where you’re not only encouraged to continue learning and growing in a field you’re excited about but also given resources to pursue your education to do so.”
