Company Description

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Are you interested in joining some of the brightest talent in the world to strengthen the United States’ security? Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where our employees apply their expertise to create solutions for BIG ideas that make our world a better place.

We are committed to a diverse and equitable workforce with an inclusive culture that values and celebrates the diversity of our people, talents, ideas, experiences, and perspectives. This is essential to innovation and creativity for continued success of the Laboratory’s mission.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Applied Mathematician - Postdoctoral Researcher to leverage numerical discretization and analysis tools to improve the simulation capability of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), the climate simulation framework for the Department of Energy.  Focus areas will include numerical integration techniques for multiphysics and multiscale problems, finite volume methods for hyperbolic conservation laws, and the analysis of methods and resulting solutions both in isolation and within the full Earth system model. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team consisting of climate and scientific computing experts from various laboratories and universities. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division within the Computing Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Research, implement, and apply new methods for the numerical discretization of a large, nonlinear, multiphysics model in a collaborative scientific environment.
  • Analyze existing coupling between atmosphere processes (bulk fluid flow, turbulence, radiation, etc.) and then introduce improvements using novel time integration schemes in collaboration with domain area experts.
  • Develop a new finite volume approach for a hyperbolic subset of equations in E3SM, as well as assist with the implementation of the new approach in the production code in collaboration with numerical experts from FASTMath.
  • Actively participate with project scientists and engineers in defining, planning, and formulating experimental, modeling, and simulation efforts for complex problems stemming from global Earth system applications.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics or related field.
  • Research experience in the implementation and evaluation of numerical methods for solving partial differential equations.
  • Research experience in scientific computing, including programming in a compiled language within a Unix/Linux environment.
  • Proficiency in numerical analysis techniques, such as asymptotic convergence theory or truncation error analysis.
  • Strong analytic and critical thinking skills for the independent development of solutions to complex research problems in a timely manner.
  • Ability to develop independent research directions and describe results effectively in published peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment, prepare written reports, and present and explain technical information.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers and other technical and administrative staff in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

 Qualifications We Desire

  • Research experience in the development and/or analysis of time integration methods.
  • Research experience in numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws.
  • Experience programming with MPI for large distributed-memory systems.
  • Strong interest in engaging with and contributing to the field of climate simulation.
  • Familiarity with Fortran.

Additional Information

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  An L or Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.  For additional information please see DOE Order 472.2.
