Job Description

We have an opening for a Research Scientist who will conduct research in the analysis and interpretation of radiochemical data from nuclear explosions. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team to develop new capabilities for post-detonation nuclear forensics and stockpile stewardship.  This position is in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group within the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division and will support the Global Security (N Program) and Weapons and Complex Integration Directorates.

In this role you will 

  • Develop proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of radiochemical data from nuclear weapons, and conduct research to advance new capabilities for interpreting radiochemical data.
  • Design and participate in experiments to acquire data that will test new research concepts.
  • Work independently on complex technical tasks requiring in-depth data analysis and develop unique technical solutions.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers.
  • Communicate results to internal and external sponsors via written technical reports and oral presentations.
  • Write research proposals to gain new funding for projects from sponsors.
  • Travel occasionally to interact and collaborate with colleagues in conference/meeting or training settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Geochemistry, or Nuclear Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform independent analysis of technical problems involving complex data sets.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects, lead research teams, and coordinate large technical collaborations.
  • Significant experience with programming in Python (preferred), C/C++, Fortran, and/or other programming languages.
  • Ability to develop technical products and clearly convey complex technical information, as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature or equivalent classified research documents.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to integrate into a large team of people with diverse technical backgrounds.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience working within the DOE complex.
  • Experience in radiochemistry, radioactive counting techniques, and/or analytical chemistry methods.
  • Experience with advanced statistical methods.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
