Pay Range

$148,650 - $200,328 Annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Full Stack Software Engineer to contribute to a variety of software development assignments in support of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the largest and most energetic laser in the world. You will work with a team of other software developers to build, maintain, and advance applications used by a broad set of end-users in support of laser experiment planning, review, and configuration.  This position is in the NIFC Division within the Computing Directorate, in support of the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF&PS).

In this role you will

  • Develop applications consisting of standalone back-end services and persistent data storage using modern database technologies.
  • Develop web-based and standalone client applications to provide front-end to access back-end services.
  • Architect and implement highly available web/application/cloud service/container tier infrastructures required to support enterprise IT service delivery across public/private cloud infrastructures.
  • Develop highly automated, available, and standardized infrastructures/services that meet business/programmatic needs in collaboration with customers, IT managers, developers, team members, systems administrators, database administrators, and security administrators.
  • Manage systems/services architectures throughout their systems development lifecycle, including risk analysis, capacity planning, highly available systems architecture and design, development, quality assurance, documentation, standards enforcement, implementations and upgrades, security compliance/vulnerability remediation, and performance monitoring.
  • Manage multiple web/application/cloud service/container tier infrastructures within the AWS, Azure, and container environments to help drive our standardization, infrastructure as code, and security enhancement objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Management Information Systems, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience with modern programming languages such as Python or Java, as well as related web frameworks such as Django or Spring.
  • Advanced experience designing and implementing functional and streamlined web-based user interfaces and GUIs.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern data storage and persistence approaches using databases such as Oracle and MongoDB.
  • Advanced experience with systems programming to create, configure, monitor, and automate the management of web/application/cloud services/container infrastructures such as Kubernetes, AWS, and Docker Swarm.
  • Significant experience collaborating with customers, IT managers, developers, database administrators, systems administrators, and security administrators to jointly create web/application/cloud service/container infrastructures/services that meet business requirements.
  • Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Management Information Systems.
  • Experience with existing image-processing libraries, tools, and frameworks, such as OpenCV and Napari in Python.
  • Experience with scientific computing and machine-learning languages, tools, and frameworks, such as MATLAB and Tensorflow.
