Pay Range

$108,840 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in casting and fabrication of biocompatible materials.  You will actively participate in the research to evaluate and cast biological or biocompatible materials, particularly with enzymatic solutions, fungal spores, microbes, and/or bio-concrete/biocompatible ceramic slurries. This position is in the High Performance Materials group of the Materials Science Division.

You will 

  • Conduct research in casting and biocompatibility of slurry, gel, or concrete compositions. 
  • Develop a biocompatible method to enable self-repair of existing concrete infrastructure by inorganic or biological mechanisms.
  • Design and perform experiments on gelation, curing chemistry, and long-term biological materials viability on cast samples.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
  • Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE/DoD communities and at academic conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in biological materials, biocompatibility, and/or enzymatic/microbial activities
  • Knowledgeable of the concepts of gelation, colloidal chemistry, and/or casting (ceramic slurries, clays, concretes, or cements).
  • Ability to be an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques. and execution.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
    Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Broad experience in a variety of materials characterization and analytical chemistry techniques, such as tensile/flexural/compressional testing, rheometry, FTIR, EDS, Raman, NMR, DMA, DSC/TGA, or SEM.
  • Experience in concrete chemistry, testing, and/or modeling.
  • Experience with non-destructive evaluation of heterogenous materials using ultrasound, x-ray tomography, or microwave techniques.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
