Job Description
We have an opening for the Director of the Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF). The Jupiter Laser Facility is a unique, mid-scale laser user facility with three diverse laser platforms for research in high energy density (HED) science. You will provide leadership and promote collaborations that generate creative and innovative research at the forefront of HED science and technology, with an emphasis on providing access to young researchers, including students. You will partner with outside agencies to develop and expand external funding avenues for both JLF and JLF users, help establish the need for enhancing the technical capabilities of JLF, and develop proposals to meet those requirements. You will also work within LLNL to provide collaborative assistance to programs, as well as seeking technical and funding resources within those programs. You will collaborate with the DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) to maintain JLF’s place in FES’s LaserNetUS program. This position is in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.
You will
- Provide expert guidance, scientific and technical leadership and direction regarding the development and implementation of national and international academic and institutional collaborations for the Jupiter Laser Facility in pertinent areas of high energy density (HED) physics, including all areas of experimental plasma physics, fusion science (including direct and indirect application to inertial fusion energy), and material dynamics, as well as technical developments in those areas, including diagnostic development.
- Cultivate, grow, and maintain technical relationships with partners across academia, national labs, government agencies, and industry to nurture and grow HED science and technology.
- Influence strategic technical decisions to anticipate the needs of external funding agencies and external customers.
- Formulate a fundamental research and technology strategy consistent with sponsors’ and stakeholders’ needs and investment areas at JLF.
- Promote and coordinate efforts and planning across LLNL organizations to use resources optimally and maximize technical impact.
- Develop internal and external communication strategies for JLF.
- Act as a resource and mentor for the JLF scientists, students, visitors, and collaborators.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Nationally recognized expertise in HED science, fusion energy science, dynamics of materials, or other relevant areas.
- Extensive experience and expert ability to develop, apply, and lead state-of-the-art techniques to address research challenges in HED science, including material science and plasma physics.
- Extensive experience guiding and providing strategic direction for projects to a diverse group of scientists, using proven expert-level communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
- Expert communication, facilitation, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, as well as problem-solving skills necessary to direct an institute and lead cooperative strategic planning.
- Ability to delegate effectively and to lead, motivate, and build complex teams to work toward institutional goals.
Qualifications We Desire:
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of Laboratory science programs that are executed or can be executed at JLF.
- Experience with the DOE Office of Science and NNSA research programs.
- Knowledge of and experience with laser science concepts and hardware.
- Working knowledge and understanding of applicable DOE procedures and policies.
