Job Description

We have multiple openings for Nuclear Analysts to join an interdisciplinary team conducting analysis of nuclear fuel cycle processes and their implications for the national security interests of the United States. You will apply a combination of technical expertise, critical thinking, and in-depth analysis of information from a variety of sources to provide assessments in support of customer objectives and mission. Note: candidates chosen for interview will be asked to submit a writing sample. These positions will work programmatically within Global Security (GS) Principal Directorate’s Z Program and will administratively report to the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Conduct moderately complex to complex research on sensitive, politically significant national security topics, to include nuclear fuel cycle processes and related technologies and maintain awareness of relevant current events and information in assigned areas.
  • Contribute to the development of a focused national security research program in assigned areas that address key science and technology and policy questions, assist in identifying priorities, defining problems, and proposing analytic methodologies with limited direction.
  • Identify priorities, define problems, propose moderately complex to complex analysis methodologies, collect and organize data, and write assessments in support of sponsor and other stakeholder objectives.
  • Prepare moderately complex to complex intelligence assessments that adhere to intelligence community analytic standards.
  • Present analytic findings as verbal briefings to sponsors and other stakeholders; may include some domestic and international travel.
  • Contribute to the development of new program opportunities, including the definition and development of research proposals and interaction with potential sponsors and customers under limited direction.
  • Maintain required security in a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) environment for information that is under the analyst’s direct control.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

  • Represent the organization as a main point of contact on multiple complex intelligence related tasks and large projects, working effectively with conflicting priorities.
  • Contribute advanced knowledge on national security issues to inform the development of complex strategies and plans to meet programmatic objectives.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (nuclear or chemical), relevant scientific discipline (chemistry, radiochemistry, physics, material science), or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams to identify priorities, define problems, develop and carry out analytical approaches to gather and assess intelligence data, achieve moderately complex to complex project objectives; includes strength in partnering with outside organizations successfully, under limited direction.
  • Experience working effectively under deadlines, reasoning effectively under broadly defined objectives and limited information, coordinating workload on multiple projects simultaneously, and meeting deadlines with conflicting priorities.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams across organizational work units, utilizing effective teamwork and customer service skills.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate in an interdisciplinary team environment, author moderately complex to complex technical analyses, and present technical information to external sponsors and customers.
  • Ability to travel off-site, including potentially internationally, for sponsor and customer interaction.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level

  • Master’s degree in engineering (nuclear or chemical), relevant scientific discipline (chemistry, radiochemistry, physics, material science) or the equivalent combination of education and significant prior relevant experience.
  • Experience delivering high-quality, impactful, and complex technical products.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate with internal and external teams and advise senior management and external sponsors.
     

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in engineering (nuclear or chemical), relevant scientific discipline (chemistry, radiochemistry, physics, material science) or the equivalent combination of education and significant prior relevant experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding and/or experience in industry of nuclear or chemical industry, in one or more of the following areas: equipment or plant design, process development, quality control, quality assurance, criticality safety, or hazardous/radioactive waste management or related technologies.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience working within or with the U.S. intelligence community and/or military analyzing national security issues to include one or more of the following topics: foreign nuclear weapons programs, nuclear material processing, or related technologies.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Some positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement above).  If you are selected and a clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  An L or Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  For additional information please see DOE Order 472.2.
