Job Description

We have an opening for a Chemistry & Materials Scientific Associate (C&MS) to support applied programs by collecting and analyzing data on a variety of tests and measurements on materials with an emphasis on metals and alloys.  Under general guidance from scientists and engineers the successful candidate will utilize specialized instruments and laboratory tools to characterize materials using microstructural characterization equipment, hardness testers, thermal analysis instruments, and powder analysis equipment.  Work will be conducted in the materials characterization laboratories in the Materials Engineering Division and you will assume responsibility for the daily operation, calibration, and maintenance of various laboratory scale characterization equipment.  You will routinely interact with professional colleagues, research scientists, technicians, and mid-level management across the laboratory.  This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role, you will

  • Acquire and analyze data and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex problems using individual creativity and judgment.
  • Operate and maintain a suite of laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance of thermal, optical, and mechanical analysis instruments, including troubleshooting, scheduling regular maintenance, and repairs.
  • Prepare specimens using metallographic methods for microstructural examination.
  • Perform work with chemicals to clean, etch and react specimens for analysis.
  • Occasionally work with radioactive metals and metal powders.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratory environment. Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Provide original solutions to scientific problems in one or more areas of chemistry and materials science.
  • Provide recommendations to supervisors on equipment acquisition and upgrades.
  • Provide technical advice and direction to technicians, making frequent decisions using a high degree of independent discretion and judgment.
  • Perform materials characterization using a variety of instruments, including x-ray florescence, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and other thermal analysis techniques, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical microscopy (OM).
  • Report results in written and verbal format in a timely manner.
  • Train technicians and scientific staff in operation of lab equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
  • Highly advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities in materials engineering, including theory, design, documentation and operating advanced experimental systems to characterize alloys.
  • Experience in performing materials characterization using a variety of instruments, including x-ray florescence, DSC, SEM, and OM.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills necessary to communicate results of research and prepare written reports.
  • Ability to solve complex materials and materials process problems.
  • Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding variable technical complex problems.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment with commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.
  • Proven track record for completing projects and delivering results on time and on budget.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Highly knowledgeable in operating PC controlled equipment.
  • Experience in powder characterization and processing.
  • Experience working with chemicals and working safely in a chemical environment.

Security Clearance
