Job Description

We have an opening for a Chemical Engineering/Flow Chemistry Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in development and analysis of materials and systems for carbon dioxide capture and conversion. You will actively participate in a multidisciplinary team performing materials synthesis, system design, and kinetic analysis of carbon capture and carbon conversion processes. This position is in the Materials for Energy and Climate Security group of the Materials Science Division.

In this role you will

  • Conduct research in carbon capture adsorbent design, synthesis, fabrication, and testing, including adsorption and reaction kinetics, materials characterization, and performance degradation.
  • Develop systems for fabricating and evaluating adsorbent and/or catalyst materials in flow conditions.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of experiments to develop structure-property-performance relationships for porous solid materials for carbon capture and conversion.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary and multi-institution team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Maintain laboratory protocols and best safety practices.
  • Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals; and present results within the DOE community, at project team meetings, and at conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Hands on experience building, validating, and using fixed bed flow reactor systems for evaluation of adsorbent or catalyst materials.
  • Experience with operating and analyzing steady state and/or breakthrough fixed bed systems and temperature-swing and/or pressure-swing processes.
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more key areas: flow reactors, heterogeneous catalysis, gas chemisorption and physisorption, adsorptive separations, and/or porous materials synthesis and characterization.
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Ability to develop and execute independent research projects as documented through a strong publication record of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to allow effective collaboration in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, extrusion, and powder handling.
  • Experience with the chemistry, materials, and systems relevant to carbon capture and conversion.
  • Experience with analytical techniques and materials characterization methods (TGA, DSC, NMR, IR, GC-MS, LC-MS, gas adsorption, etc.).
