Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research on atmospheric modeling of wildfire smoke emissions and transport.  This position will have an emphasis on developing a global multi-scale model and analyzing simulations, including atmospheric chemistry and aerosols.  You will be pursuing original research using the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and the associated regionally refined model (RRM).  This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division of the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct original research on developing a multi-scale global simulation framework for atmospheric modeling of wildfire smoke.
  • Conduct fundamental research assessing the radiative impact of wildfire smoke on the regional and global scales.
  • Modify the E3SM model as required, including modifications to model inputs and physics parameterization
  • Run simulations in a high-performance computing environment and perform analysis of model output against observations.
  • Contribute to the conception, design, and execution of research on the effects of wildfires using observation and modeling tools.
  • Publish research results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric science or closely related fields.
  • Knowledge of global climate models, atmospheric chemistry, and aerosol
  • Experience in conducting research in atmospheric science or a closely related field.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: wildfire modeling, atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, multi-scale atmospheric modeling.
  • Proficient in at least one scientific programming language for modeling and model output data analysis (e.g., NCL, Python, Fortran, C++, etc.).
  • Ability to effectively perform independent research.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications we desire

  • Knowledge of atmospheric model and/or parameterization development, testing and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of the E3SM aerosol model (MAM4).
  • Expertise in advanced statistics and/or simulation uncertainty quantification.
