We have an opening for a Deputy Associate Program Leader for Nuclear Materials Engineering. You will lead a variety of special projects in the LLNL nuclear facilities (Superblock) and the design, installation, and testing of a collection of expanding activities that include plutonium and tritium process systems engineering, equipment reconfiguration, characterization and radiography equipment, E-Beam and laser welders, and legacy disposition of glovebox lines and associated equipment. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), in support of the Nuclear Materials (NM) Program within the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Lead the development, management, and execution of work for Nuclear Materials programmatic projects and provide guidance to ensure the science and technical efficacy of the group.
- Collaborate with Nuclear Materials Technology Program (NMTP) programmatic engineers in design reviews, engineering support, and electrical support, in addition to project principals in defining work objectives.
- Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to a diverse set of design and installation activities housed within the Superblock.
- Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones, lead corrective actions, and communicate program requirements in an effective and timely manner.
- Represent the program alongside the Nuclear Materials Engineering Associate Program Leader in developing budgets, tracking costs and market capabilities, and communicating with various stakeholders internal and external to the laboratory.
- Assign work and remain cognizant of the technical goals and progress of group projects.
- Interact with program engineers and scientists, DOE staff, operations personnel, and with mid-level management outside and within the Laboratory.
- Travel up to 25% time to oversee and coordinate LLNL activities at off-site locations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level
- Lead, manage, coordinate projects with Principal Investigators and Responsible Individuals, including funding oversight, allocation of personnel and budgets.
- Develop innovative concepts and provide expert leadership, technical vision in glovebox application development areas.
- Brief work to senior management and program sponsors on strategic approach, programmatic considerations and overall impact.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Advanced experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities in theory, design, and application of management practices to resolve technical engineering problems.
- Advanced leadership and team building skills, mature judgment, and the ability to approach and resolve difficult issues using creative problem-solving skills and decision-making techniques.
- Advanced interpersonal skills with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential issues with tact and discretion.
- Significant experience in mechanical engineering project leadership, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating and reporting, and analyzing and managing a budget.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information to all levels internal and external to the laboratory.
- Working knowledge of applicable Department of Energy orders, national codes, and standards.
Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level
- Serve as organization spokesperson by Laboratory management and/or external advisor by sponsors.
- Extensive experience with engineering analysis and hardware design, fabrication, and testing processes and deployment of cutting-edge technologies.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.
- Extensive experience and expert technical knowledge to address advancements that may have impact beyond the Laboratory.
- Mentor staff across the organization, including other mentors.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master’s degree or PhD in engineering or physical science, or related field.
- Significant experience working with plutonium, nuclear facilities, or a highly regulated radiological field to design systems and operations for rigorous work control process.
- Experience in handling fissile materials in gloveboxes.
- Experience in materials processing and applications.
