Job Description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher Member with expertise in nonlinear and ultrafast optics. You will have hands-on experience with high power diode-pumped lasers and extensive experience in engineering or physics laboratories.  You will team with research staff to conduct laboratory experiments on pulsed fiber lasers, as well as beam combining and system application of such lasers.  In addition, you will spend 25% time researching a related topic of your choosing.  This position falls within the Fiber Technology Group of the NIF&PS DOD Technologies Program (DODT) and is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Associate Directorate (PAD).

In this role you will 

  • Plan and execute laboratory experiments with a primary emphasis on scaling the average power and pulse energy of fiber-based lasers.
  • Perform independent work on a team with LLNL scientists to design, build, and test novel fibers for lasers and sensors.
  • Prepare and conduct technical presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of researchers; can utilize up to 25% of your time on this; should be a topic that will help prepare you for a PI role in the future ideally.
  • Work within a dynamic team, including senior and junior scientists and engineers, to coordinate resources, plan experimental campaigns, document research, perform training/mentorship, provide deliverables, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results.
  • Participate in preparing proposal applications.
  • Specify and procure specialty laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Adhere to strict laboratory safety requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance the position will need to be cleared to a Q/L after hire which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Lasers, Optics and Optoelectronics, laser spectroscopy or related field or discipline such as Physics or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with laser sources, with emphasis on pulsed lasers and nonlinear optics.  This includes high power diode-pumped lasers and extensive experience in engineering or physics laboratories.
  • Experience planning and executing experimental campaigns.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Experience developing independent research projects, including publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports, publications, and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with designing and/or building ultrashort pulse lasers.
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art fiber and laser technologies and their applications (public, private, international R&D efforts).
  • Prior experience with fiber optics and Raman spectroscopy is preferred but not required.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Some positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement above).  If you are selected and a clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
