Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of computational plasma physics to advance simulation capabilities for pulsed power drivers.  The position involves application of high-fidelity kinetic models to understand microscale plasma dynamics in pulsed power experiments and to enable breakthroughs in predictive modeling. Importantly, the position involves development of parallel high-order accurate numerical algorithms that leverage exascale-class computing platforms to facilitate high performance simulations of experimental conditions.  This position is in National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will 

  • Research and develop algorithms for solving high-fidelity plasma physics models so as to exploit exascale-class computer architectures and enable investigations of power flow physics in pulsed power drivers.
  • Research, apply, evaluate, and test parallel programming models and C++ libraries that facilitate memory management and enable numerical solvers to run efficiently on heterogeneous exascale computing architectures.
  • Work with domain experts to apply simulation capabilities to advance scientific understanding of power flow physics.
  • Document key research findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
  • Coordinate with internal and external scientists to maximize impact and relevance of R&D.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Ph.D. in Scientific Computing, Computational Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related computational science and engineering discipline.
  • Experience with programming in C/C++.
  • Experience with high-performance computing, parallel programming, and GPU programming.
  • Familiarity with numerical methods for solving partial differential equations.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct original and independent research through a proven track record of scientific accomplishments.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to interact with a multidisciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver technical presentations.

  • Experience in the fields of pulsed power and/or plasma physics.

Security Clearance
