We have an opening for an experienced Electrical Engineer. You will contribute to the development and implementation of power, control, and diagnostic instrumentation in high power laser systems within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) directorate. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining electrical hardware used in a wide range of systems required to develop and operate novel high-power lasers which may have a high consequence of failure. Your scope of work will include maintenance, upgrades, and operational support of power distribution and control systems. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division of the Engineering Directorate. LSEO provides support to National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
In this role, you will
- Provide electrical engineering solutions including circuit design and software which contribute to the definition, design, documentation, assembly, calibration, testing, and fielding and maintenance of complex laser electrical systems involving parameters that may not be well defined.
- Design electrical circuits and embedded controller systems to facilitate controls, sensor integration, data transmission, and power distribution for novel laser systems utilizing advanced knowledge.
- Perform subsystem tests that may involve motors, actuators, laser systems, optical systems, streak cameras, high-speed oscilloscopes, and the integration of these types of systems into complex lasers.
- Contribute and provide oversight to the development of procedures for electrical installation, test, operation, and maintenance, independently and under minimal direction.
- Develop system control strategies and applications, documenting all design and implementing software under configuration management.
- Develop complex LabVIEW applications for supervisory, diagnostics, automated processing and/or device level controls.
- Assess strategic technical needs for development of supporting research and investments in detector technology infrastructure; lead technical initiatives in advancing state of the art detection and recording system capabilities.
- Plan and execute complex short term (1-3 day) electrical component and system level tests at specialized partner organization’s test facilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities at the SES.4 Level
- Develop long term strategic goals to update and keep the technology used by the team current and viable for the support of existing and future laser systems using highly advanced knowledge and substantial experience.
- Direct operation support for hardware development/improvement efforts including factors that frequently are not well defined.
- Represent the team as a subject matter expert and report out on issues to other organizations across and outside the Laboratory.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or combination of education and a significant amount of previously relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge of and significant experience with electrical engineering concepts related to design, documentation, assembly, calibration, troubleshooting, and testing of complex electrical systems.
- Significant experience in design, deployment, and maintenance of electrical hardware with an emphasis on embedded systems.
- Experience performing hands-on testing and debugging of complex electronic hardware.
- Experience working with ADC, DACs, op-amps, board level high speed signals, power semiconductors.
- Advanced knowledge of and significant experience with digital and analog circuit design and implementation.
- Significant experience with small scale lab automation (oscilloscopes, digital delay generators, power supplies, motor controllers, data acquisition systems, or similar) to accelerate the collection of test data.
- Experience with Field Programmable Gate Array programing (FPGA) in Verilog or VHDL, microcontrollers and embedded systems.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
Additional qualifications at the SES.4 Level
- Subject matter expert knowledge of highly complex control system design and substantial experience and knowledge in configuration management. Expert knowledge and substantial experience with data reduction, analysis, and interpretation; application of statistical methods as applied to reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM).
- Experience in applying formal systems engineering principles and methods to highly complex system development to aid in long term and future improvements and strategies.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
Qualifications we desire
- Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in building hardware and software to manage SCADA systems including devices such as control of CCD cameras, 4-20mA and 0-10 V control and measurement signals. Experience configuring and tuning single loop PID controllers.
- Technical leadership skills for leading and managing small, multi-disciplinary teams.

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.
