Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform research and development of advanced finite element methods for multi-physics simulation codes in support of the Laboratory’s national security mission. You will work independently as a technical expert on a code development team, focusing on models and algorithms for use in high-performance computing on the latest large-scale parallel computing platforms in advancing the state of the art in large-scale multi-physics simulation. The work will often involve parallel tasks requiring prioritization. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division within the Computing Directorate.

In this role you will 

  • Research and develop new methods for transferring finite element solutions between curvilinear high order finite element meshes.

  • Research and develop new methods to efficiently and accurately apply geometric Boolean operations (e.g., intersections, unions and differences) to high order curvilinear finite elements in 2D and 3D.

  • Research and develop efficient numerical quadrature schemes for regions bounded by curved edges and surfaces.

  • Implement solutions within the Axom and MFEM software libraries.

  • Present and disseminate research results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.

  • Experience with computational geometry on high order curves and surfaces.

  • Knowledge of and experience with applications of numerical quadrature schemes.

  • Experience with C++ as well as prototyping languages, such as Python/Matlab/Mathematica.

  • Ability to conduct high-quality research and evaluate the results, as demonstrated by publications, reports, and presentations.

  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to craft creative solutions to independently solve complex problems.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with high order finite element software (e.g., the MFEM finite element library).

  • Experience developing modular computer science infrastructure for HPC (e.g., within the Axom computer science infrastructure library).

  • Experience with scientific computing applications.
