Job Description
We are looking for undergraduate student interns to work in the Nuclear Criticality Safety Division (NCSD) within the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Directorate. You may provide technical support relative to several of the LLNL nuclear facilities (e.g., the Plutonium Facility and radiological facilities). These facilities support DOE programs involving fissile materials disposition, dismantlement, verification technologies, and stockpile stewardship. You may also assist in research and development in support of the Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP).
In this role you will
- Students will work with a mentor and LLNL personnel performing criticality safety related tasks.
- Perform technical/scientific assignments at a basic to moderate degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to engineers and scientists, assisting experienced staff in developing:
- Criticality safety evaluations; or
- Research and development activities in support of relevant programs (e.g., the US DOE Nuclear Criticality Safety Program); or
- Configuration management and upgrade project documents for facility building systems (e.g., criticality accident alarm systems and nuclear accident dosimetry).
- Gather and analyze data and information in support of the work activity.
- Participate in planning and evaluation discussions.
- Present informal progress reports to supervisor/mentor on a regular basis.
- Work safely and efficiently on multiple projects simultaneously
- Attend relevant seminars and/or conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related field.
- Ability to apply basic principles of engineering (i.e. business, communication, etc.) to solve problems.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
- Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience performing radiation measurements.
- Experience with radiation transport codes (e.g., COG, GEANT, MCNP, or SCALE).

Security Clearance
LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory. Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).
