Gordon S. Smith

Gordon S. Smith, a Livermore resident for more than 47 years and a Lab retiree, died July 19 at Valley Care Medical Center. He was 82.

Born June 10, 1928, he was the son of Blanche and Paul Smith of Kirkwood, Mo.

He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Cornell University in 1957. After several years at Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, Pa., Smith came to LLNL in 1963 where he spent the remainder of his career until his retirement in 1994.

During his near-half century in Livermore, Smith was active in local politics and civic affairs where he had a special interest in childhood education. He was an avid fan of jazz music and had an extensive collection of old records.

He also was an accomplished writer of short stories.

Smith is survived by his sons, Kevin Smith of Westport, Conn., and Darren Smith of Newport Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Charlotte Smith, Oliver Smith and Aidan Smith; and brother, Howard Smith of Fremont.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Renee Corey Smith.

Services were held in Livermore. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Renee Smith Scholarship Fund at the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council, P.O. Box 1298, Pleasanton, CA 94566.
