David Holten

David Charles Holten died Aug. 13 at the Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nev.

Holten was raised in Tulsa and Alva, Okla. After high school, he worked as an underground laborer in the mines near Vail, Colo. He then attended the Colorado School of Mines for one year before enlisting in the U. S. Air Force where he served in Korea as an F-84 fighter pilot.

After he left the Air Force, he attended the University of Colorado. After graduation, he worked briefly in the private sector before returning to complete a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. He later joined the Laboratory.

Holten was intrigued by maps, and enjoyed hiking, traveling, fishing, photography and cooking.

In the Sierra Club, he led snowshoe backpacking forays into the Sierras as well as summer hikes. In his later years, he was on the Board of Directors and a trip leader for the Desert Survivors based out of Oakland, Calif. Most recently, he organized a hiking group for the University of Nevada’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for local hikes. He volunteered two days a week at the Renown Medical Center.

Holten is survived by his wife, Marian; children, Pamela, Kim, Janelle, David Jr. and Jill; six grandchildren; brother, Joe Holten of San Angelo, Texas; sister, Mary McPhee of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held in Sparks, Nev. on Aug. 20. Donations may be made in Holten’s name to the St. Vincent’s Dining Room, 500 E. 4th St., Reno, NV 89512.
