William Miller

Lab retiree William C. Miller, a resident of Lafayette, Calif. died July 29. He was 91.

Born in 1921 in LaCrosse, Wis., he moved with his family to Alameda when he was six.

He graduated from Alameda High School where he played on the varsity football team. Miller served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet during World War II. He attended the College of Engineering at the University of California in Berkeley, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 and later became a member of the Society of Professional Engineers.

As a mechanical engineer, he started working at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab in 1949 and was one of the first to move to the Livermore Lab when it opened. He retired in 1983 and was soon after rehired as a consultant until 2006.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters, Barbara Jorgensen, Nancy Parish and Amy Neal; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Catherine Botke.

A memorial service will be held Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Anselm's Episcopal Church, 682 Michael Lane, Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Miller's name to St. Anselm's or Hospice of the East Bay.
