William (Bill) C. Herrmann

William (Bill) C. Herrmann died Aug. 17. He was 96.

Son of the late Charles and Mare Herrmann, he was born in New York on Nov. 26, 1926, and grew up in Queens. After high school he attended New York Institute of Photography, where he received an associate of arts degree. He then worked in fashion and catalogue photography. He moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico during World War II and served stateside reporting to Julius Oppenheimer on the Manhattan Project.  He returned to New York after the war and worked as a fashion photographer only to be requited back to New Mexico to work at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 1958 he transferred to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he worked until he retired in 1988.

Herrmann is survived by his wife Maureen, and children: Alice McNally, Jeff Herrmann, Brian Herrmann, Margaery Williams, Diane Mota, and Rebeca Ward as well as 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
