Willard Schmidt

Willard B. Schmidt died of pulmonary disease May 28. He was 91.

Born in Oakland on Jan. 17, 1922, he graduated from Castlemont High School.  He served in the Army Air Corps in Greenland during World War II.

Schmidt had a long career with the Lab, retiring in 1982 to pursue a life as a bay sailor, Trinidad fisherman and Baja traveler.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan; his sons, Gregory and Paul (Gloria) of Sacramento and Brendan (Denise) of Walnut Creek; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by his sister, Beatrice Lademan of Rossmoor and brother, Harold of Capitola.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mads and Agnes Schmidt of Oakland, and his brother, Jess of Saratoga.

Family and friends are invited to visit June 4 after 10:30 a.m.  The funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m., both at Holy Angels Funeral and Cremation Center, 1051 Harder Road, Hayward. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
