Walter G. Boyle Jr.

Walter G. Boyle, Jr.., a retired Lab chemist, died Aug. 10 at his home in Walnut Creek. He was 83.

Born June 27, 1928, Boyle grew up in Seattle, Wash. He served locally as an active reservist in the Army National Guard during the Korean conflict.

He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemistry from the University of Washington. Upon graduation, he moved to the Bay Area and worked at the Lab as a chemist until his retirement in 1989. He lived in Walnut Creek for 53 years.

Boyle was preceded in death by his son, Alex, in 1993 and his wife, Hildegard, in 2001.

He is survived by his son, Sean; sister, Ellen; niece, Marlene; and nephews, Jerry and Keith.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Hull’s Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave. Donations in memory of Walter can be made to the University of Washington, Friends of Chemistry Fund or an AIDS charity of your choice.
