Wallace Clements

Wallace Edmund Robert Clements of Livermore and Montrose, Colo. died January 20, of complications from Alzheimer's. He was 89.

Clements was born in Dixon's Corners, Ontario Canada on Fe. 3, 1923 and grew up in Ogdensburg, NY. His mother was Elma Dacie Thompson and his father was George Washington Clements.

Clements attended Houghton College before World War II. During the war he trained as a pilot in the Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. During a training exercise, his B-17 aircraft was hit by a fighter and lost one wing. Clements was one of the two crew members who managed to escape the disabled bomber. After the war he graduated from Hobart College, and did graduate work in education at Harvard University.

During the 1950s Clements worked as a seismologist on oil crews surveying the northern Rocky Mountain region. After transferring to an office in Midland, Texas he met his future wife, Mary Helen Wygal, on a bus trip to ski in the Rockies. After they married, Clements' job took them back to North Dakota and Montana. Tired of the cold winters, in 1960 they moved to the Bay Area and settled in Livermore, where he worked as a technical editor for LLNL.

They resided in Livermore until 2008 when they moved to Colorado to be close to their daughter. Clements enjoyed the outdoors through bicycling, hiking, and camping. He was an active member of the Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club and the Sierra Club for many years. After he retired, he and his wife also traveled extensively.

Clements mentored junior employees in his department at LLNL, contributed to many charities and volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America and the Big Brothers Association.

Wallace is survived by his two brothers, Paul and Mahlon Clements as well as his son, Gregory Minot Clements, his daughter, Amanda Ruth Clements, and four grandchildren, Jasper, Edelawit, Charlotte and Gillian.

He was preceded in death by his sister Georgina.

A memorial service will be held June 29 from 4-6 p.m. at the Shearer residence, 1972 South Livermore Avenue, Livermore. Please contact Amanda Clements at (970) 596-3283 for more information.
