Victor C. Alkire Sr.

Victor C. Alkire Sr., a longtime Tracy resident and Lab retiree, died at his home Feb. 10. He was 93.

Alkire was born March 31, 1918, in McComb, Okla., and settled in Tracy in 1957.

He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and the Korean War. He was a medic with the 5th Army in Italy, Austria and Germany from 1944 to 1946. His final assignment was in Vienna, Austria, as a member of the Allied occupation force. He was present at the liberation of Dachau concentration camp and the signing of the armistice in Berlin.

He worked as a protective force officer at LLNL, retiring in 1991 and returning as a security escort until 1998.

He served as a as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Grace Church.

He is survived by his son, Vic Alkire Jr., and his wife, Marie, of Manteca; daughter, Janice L. Duncan, and her husband, John, of Tracy; daughter-in-law, Catherine Alkire of Clovis; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; Leona Alkire of Manteca and Charles and Elise Mooneyham of Topeka, Kan., and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his wife of 64 years, Dixie Lee Alkire; a son, John David Alkire; parents, Alice and Richard Alkire; and siblings, Edith Patten, Louis Alkire, Margie Hoag, Ruby McCray, Oscar Alkire and Billy Don Alkire.

Services will be held Monday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at Grace Church, 1330 N. Tracy Blvd.
