Thomas McCreary

Thomas G. McCreary died Aug. 20. He was 87.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Mar. 12, 1923, he was a resident of Brentwood, Calif.

He served with the Marines 4th Division during World War II. Awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Iwo Jima, he returned to Ohio to attend Bowling Green State University. After attending college, he began his long career as a scientific associate.

In 1960, he moved to California to join LLNL, where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He supported many experiments in the Chemistry and Materials Science Department, contributing to publications and making presentations on the experiments he conducted.

After moving to California, he lived in Castro Valley, Pleasanton and Brentwood.

He was active in community organizations including St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus, American Cancer Society, Meals on Wheels, Marines Delta Detachment 1155, and the Veterans Hospital in Martinez.

McCreary is survived by his wife, Frances; son, Paul and daughter-in-law, Suzy; his grandchildren, Joy and Matthew; and two brothers, Lewis of Cleveland, Ohio, and Donald of Nantucket, Mass.

He was preceded in death by his eldest brother, Robert G. McCreary Jr., who died in 1997, and Dustin “Dusty” C. McCreary, who died in 2005.

Services will be today (Aug. 27) at 11:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Brentwood.
