Stephen George Cochran

Stephen George Cochran died June 15. He was 75.

Cochran was born August 19 in Marion, Indiana to the late Lloyd Grant Cochran and Irene Eunice (Johnson) Cochran. He attended Loyola University of New Orleans for his undergraduate education.  In 1970, he moved to Ithaca, New York to complete a doctor of philosophy in nuclear physics at Cornell University. His exceptional academic talents took him to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he worked for 30 years before retiring as a leader in his division.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia (Zajac) Cochran, his three children Stephen George Cochran, Jr. (wife Melissa Matulis) of Belmont, North Carolina, Meredith Lee (Cochran) Garrity (husband Ryan Garrity) of Walpole, Massachusetts, and James Grant Cochran (wife Melissa Cochran) of Rancho Carrizo, California. Known and adored as “Papa” to his nine grandchildren: Stephen Nicholas Cochran, Zachary Grant Cochran, Sophia Grace Cochran, Corinne Cynthia Garrity, Daniel Jack Garrity, Jacob Ryan Garrity, Tyler Stephen Garrity, Avery Grace Cochran, and Brayden James Cochran.

A memorial service will be held at McLean Funeral Home in Belmont, North Carolina on July 11.
