Robert A. Hansen

Retired Cmdr. Robert A. Hansen of Manteca, died April 14, at his home. He was 81.

Born Feb. 24, 1929, in Modesto, to Alvin and Bess Hansen, he was raised along with his sister in Ripon. He received his associate’s degree from Modesto Junior College, and later went on to earn his bachelor’s of science degree in industrial arts from San Jose State University in 1962.

On November 25, 1950, he married Nancy Hansen in Corpus Christi, Texas, and together they raised their family in Livermore. He would later retire to Manteca.

Hansen joined the U. S. Navy in 1950, serving six active years as a navy pilot and another 17 years on naval reserves before retiring at the rank of commander. He worked at LLNL for 30 years as a senior engineer technologist.

He was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the founder of the Livermore Rocketeers Club. In his retirement years, one of his biggest joys besides his family was his Wednesday luncheons with his childhood buddies from Ripon at local restaurants. His other interests and hobbies were radio controlled airplanes and making wind chimes for street fairs.

Hansen is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Hansen; children, Lauralee Hansen of Columbia, SC; Donald Hansen of San Ramon; Diane Governor of Manteca; and Darryl Hansen of Cool, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his son, Dale Hansen, and his sister, Carla Hansen.

Funeral services were held April 21 in Manteca, with private interment at San Joaquin National Cemetery.
