Richard Epps

Richard Epps, a Lab retiree, died at his home in Livermore Nov. 4. He was 88.

Born March 3, 1922 in Topeka, Kan., Epps served in U.S. Navy during World War II and in Korea. He attained the rank of commander before his retirement from the Naval Reserve.

He earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and a master's degree from San Jose State University. His career as an engineer included ten years at the University of California cyclotron, twenty-eight years at LLNL, as well as in personal business as a forensic engineer.

Epss was a published author of a memoir of his experiences as a Navy man. He lived his final years at Heritage Estates in Livermore where he made a multitude of friends.

He had two marriages. Virginia was the mother of his six children. Jimmie was the love of his later life.

Epps was preceded in death by both wives and his eldest son James.

He is survived by daughters Kathleen, Christine, Suzanne, and Mary; son Richard and son-in-law Mark Woy, six grandchildren five great-grandchildren.

The family will hold private services at a later date when his ashes are interred alongside his son James at the National Cemetery.
