Norval L. Parker

Norval L. Parker, a Lab retiree and resident of Livermore, died April 6. He was 86.

Born July 11, 1924 to Ida (Carmichael) and Derval Parker in Richmond, Calif., he graduated from Richmond High School and attended U.C. Berkeley before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy and headed to San Luis Obispo to complete his bachelor's of science degree at Cal Poly.

Immediately following his graduation from Cal Poly, he began his 35-year career as a physicist at the Laboratory, retiring in 1987. During retirement, he devoted his time to tutoring young students, serving as officers in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sons in Retirement organizations, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He also enjoyed fishing, playing pool, cards, bowling, and telling jokes. He was a man of many talents.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, LaVerne; sisters Betty King and Jean Bonds; children Douglas Parker; Nancy Cooper; Jeffrey Parker; Michele Stivers; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers William and David Parker.

A celebration of Parker's life will be held April 23, from 1-5 p.m. at Beeb's, 915 Clubhouse Dr., Livermore.
