Margaret F. Howe

Margaret F. Howe, who worked at LLNL during the 1960s, died Aug. 24. She was 90.

Howe was born Sept. 1, 192,0 in McKees Rock, Pa., where she grew up with her five siblings and graduated from Mckees Rocks High School in 1938.

At a young age, she worked for her father, a manager of the A&P grocery chain, counting coins and bookkeeping.

Howe lived through the Great Depression. During World War II, she sold war bonds and worked at the Stagedoor Canteen where she met her husband-to-be, Charles.

She also worked at the Christian Science Publishing Society as a switchboard telephone operator.

The couple moved to California in the early 1950s and raised their four children.

Howe worked at the Lab in the security department as well as with the first IBM computers, during the 1960s.

She opened her own business in bookkeeping and tax preparation. In the 1970s, she worked at Stocking Realty as a bookkeeper and commuted from Patterson until the age of 86.

Howe was preceded in death by her husband Charles Sr. and her son Charles Jr.

She is survived by her children, David, Robert, and Barbara Rowland; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; sisters, Laura Forker and MaryLou Booher; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held in Livermore on Aug.30.
