Manuel Leroy Main

Manuel Leroy Main, a Lab retiree and resident of Castro Valley, Calif., died Aug. 24.

Born Apr. 19, 1921, in Flint, Mich. to Roy and Florence Main, he was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, and served with the 30th bomb group, the 11th bomb group in the 42nd squadron in the South Pacific.

He received an honorable discharge as staff sergeant in 1945.

He was a 56-year member of Acacia Masonic Lodge #243 F. & A.M. of Hayward, and a recipient of the Hiram Award for outstanding service. Main also was a member of the VFW 9601.

He belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Castro Valley.

He worked as a scientific associate at the Lab, retiring in 1983 after 29 years.

Main is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret; children, Nanci Main of Ocean Park, Washington, David Main (Kim) of Boulder Creek, John Main (Marie) of Pleasant Hope, Mo., and honorary daughter, Jimella Lucas of Oysterville, Wash.; three grandchildren, Sean Main, Landan Main and Ruth Margaret Main; brother, Raymond Main of Hayward; and sister, Shirley Nichols of San Leandro.

Services were conducted with full military honors Sept. 3 in Hayward. Donations may be made in Main’s name to the Salvation Army and the First Presbyterian Church of Castro Valley.
