Lawrence Spangenberg

Lawrence "Spanky" Spangenberg, a Lab retiree and resident of Concord, Calif. died June 9. He was 80.

He was born Feb. 11, 1932, in Nashville, Tenn. to Marshall and Evelyn Spangenberg.

He served in the U. S. Navy from 1950 to 1975, during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy as an ATC chief petty officer.

Following his military service, he worked at LLNL from 1977 to 1993.

He was a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed mentoring young scouts. He was a member of the German Genealogical Society in Sacramento and was an avid cyclist with the Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club in Dublin.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Concord where he served many years as a deacon.

He enjoyed getting together with his family for holidays, birthdays and Sunday suppers.

Spangenberg is survived by his wife, Wanda; children, Larry, Ed, Glynn and Patti; siblings Marsi, Karen, Phillip; and 10 grandchildren. He also is survived by his former daughter-in-law, Donna and son-in-law, Tim.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Ted and a sister, Doris.

Services were held June 15 in Concord, Calif. Interment was conducted at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, Calif.
