Joseph A. McCarthy Sr.

Joseph A. McCarthy Sr., a resident of Castro Valley, Calif. and Lab retiree, died Sept. 1. He was 91.

Born Oct. 30, 1917, in Oakland, Calif., he was a resident of Livermore from 1967 to 2005 and then a resident of Castro Valley until his death.

McCarthy was the devoted husband of the late Angela McCarthy for 37 years and before that to the late Marian Hyllis Mahood for 20 years.

McCarthy graduated from high school in Berkeley in 1935 and St. Mary’s College in 1939.

He retired from LLNL after nearly 20 years in the Procurement Department.

He was a member of St Michael’s Catholic Church, where he served many years as a lector, Eucharistic minister, a member of the Golden Friends and a past member of the parish council and school board.

He also was a past director of Interfaith Housing Inc. and past director of the Weiner Memorial Senior Fund in Livermore.

He had been a member of Transfiguration Church in Castro Valley since 2005.

McCarthy is survived by his son and daughters-in-law, Joseph Jr. and Donna McCarthy of American Canyon, and Karen McCarthy of Castro Valley, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren andmany nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin McCarthy in 2008.

Services were Sept. 14 in Livermore with inurnment at a later date.
