John Helton

John Helton, a supervisor in the NIF Target Area Operations, died at his home in San Diego, after losing his battle with brain cancer.

Helton joined the NIF project in 2006 after a distinguished career of over 20 years in the Navy, from which he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer.

He was a key member of many of the NIF teams that installed and commissioned many of the diagnostics and positioners that are used today.

“John was instrumental in NIF's ever-evolving development and success story,” said Ed Moses, principal associate director for NIF and Photon Science. “He exhibited boundless enthusiasm and devotion to the NIF project. He was a part of the NIF family, and we will all miss his presence.”

Helton leaves his wife Barbara, and two sons, Nicholas and Nathan.

He will be buried with full military services on Sept. 25 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr., San Diego.

Donations may be made in Helton’s name to the American Cancer Society.
