Joe Alegre Jr.

Joe Alegre Jr., a lifelong Tracy area resident, died Nov. 9 at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. He was 83.

Born Sept. 22, 1928, in Banta, Calif., he was the son of Joe and Vera Alegre Sr. and grew up on the family dairy west of Tracy.

Alegre was a dairyman for many years, and after retiring was associated with the Petaluma Feed Corp. and was a director of Petaluma Cooperative Creamery. He later was a material handler at the Lab.

Alegre was a member of the Tracy Civic Athletic Club, St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Tracy Elks Lodge, IPFES, UPEC and St. Bernard’s Dads Club.

He enjoyed fishing, especially deep-sea fishing with his grandsons and his son-in-law. He was an avid Cal Bears and Oakland A’s fan.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara “Boots” Alegre of Tracy; a son, Joe Alegre III and his wife, Doris, of Stockton; a daughter, Jeanne Philpott and her husband, David, of Tracy; two sisters, Dorothy Gonsalves of Tracy and Bernice Gill, and her husband, Joe, of Los Banos; two brothers, Dennis Alegre, and his wife, Alice, of Tracy, and Frank Alegre, and his wife, Helen, of Lodi; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Frank Gonsalves, and a nephew.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave., followed by a 7 p.m. vigil service at the mortuary. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. Burial will be in Tracy Cemetery, 600 W. Schulte Road.
